Intervista a Steve su Radio Capital.

Postby highinfidelity » 26 Apr 2012, 13:59

Prima parte.

SENTIERI NOTTURNI - PUNTATA DEL 20.04.2012

(ascolto di Til These Eyes)

Sergio Mancinelli: Til These Eyes. Allora… Steve, thanks for being here, welcome to Radio Capital.
Steve Hackett: Love to be here, thank you.
SM: Buonasera, Mario.
Mario Giammetti: Buonasera.
Quarant’anni fa. Steve, fourty years ago, what happened?
SH: Well, Genesis was a very small band, we used to play in the clubs in England and then we came to Italy, they wanted us to play in much larger places, how you say, the “successo” it happened here, first of all for the band, we were very very happy to be here.
How did you imagine your forth future in those days?
SH: Well I think we were, you know the whole band, we were trying hard to make good music, but we had no idea of what would happen in the future, we just concentrated on each day and each tour and… I don’t think we had any idea, you know we were starting out, you think, you know I might have given this up in a year and do something else for a living because it might not be good enough. You know how you feel like when you start, you are lake an impostor, you know, struggling to play, but likely of course things were there for us.
MG: Our listeners asked u sto ask you some questions. One of these was: what was the role of your family in your musical training?
SH: Well you know my father was “molto musicale”, he could play harmonica, clarinet, a bugle, a trumpet you know and he was a very clever man, he didn’t play professionally, but just for fun and I learned to play harmonica first of all, mouth organ as we call it in England. I was trying to play this ever since a was two years old, by the time I was trained for I can play some tunes.
SH: Two years, I was trying.
What’s going to happen during this tour?
SH: Well I think we’re going to play things… it’s a marvellous band I’m playing with and they have a great capacity to play lots of different kinds of music, it’s not just straight ahead rock and you know it borrows from a lot of things, it borrows from jazz, a little bit from classical. Certainly some things from the early days of Genesis, maybe one third I would say of the set and the two thirds: some of the old bit of the nostalgic old material of mine, but a third of new material from Beyond the Shrouded Horizon leading the latest album which this tour is titled from.

But I feel that inside your heart there is still a blues beating.
SH: I think I grew up listening to different kinds of music but particularly blues when the sound of the electric guitar started to develop in the hands of several players. I’m thinking of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix and Peter Green, all of these guitarists made a fabulous sound, usually with the Les Paul guitar, in the hands of Hendrix it was a Stratocaster. All the developments in the sound of the guitar sonically were happening in the blues. It’s when the guitar started to sound like a voice, in a way.
MG: How do you choose your guitars?
SH: Oh, well that’s difficult, because the guitar are a lot of different instruments: electric guitar is one thing, but I’m very fond of nylon guitar, classical and flamenco, because is a completely different sounding instruments. They can sound like many different things, like a piano, like a mandolin or like a harp. It’s a very gentle sound, but it can also sound very percussive in the hands of the flamenco player, so that’s always something that I was very interested in.
SH: OK, I just do

(Performance di Steve alla chitarra acustica)

SECONDA PARTE

SM: Thanks Steve. Grazie, grazie.
MG: This programme is called “Nocturnal Pathways”. How did your nights change along the years?
SH: Well, I started to have dreams, that became quite productive at one point. I was lucky enough sometimes in the middle of the night to dream some music and the first couple of times it happened I couldn’t remember the music, but I remembered the feeling from it and I thought if only I can remember this. I had several other dreams where I could remember the music and it was an extraordinary feeling of one it would writing at yourself, not really, it just seemed like it came from some divine source or from heaven, some kind of unconscious inspiration. Nobody knows where the dreams come from of course, so this was very productive for me. That’s how my nights changed, so, you know, I gave a resting awake and at night I started working instead.

SH: Yes it was, funnily enough. This was in Sicily I seem to remember and I remember he came to the hotel and he wanted me to sign a lots of solo albums I’ve done, and I signed all of them and then he had another bag and he said, we know how do you feel signing these ones? and it was Genesis albums I’ve done and I said of course, you know, and I think he was worried I would reject the lot and I said: ‘no, I still love all that material’ and that’s what lead me to re-record it at that time and I’m working to another successor to “Genesis Revisited” now so that it will be a double album of ideas that were from early Genesis and other things that were offshoots from that. So, I’m busy recording that with a number of people at the moment, a number of friends including John Wetton who’s sung yet another song of the early Genesis… and yes I’m very excited about the new developments with the old material.
SH: Yes. I think these are both English sports, especially cricket, but it’s a combination of “Squire” and “Hackett”, of course, so it’s “Squackett”.
SM: Allora… “A Life within A Day”.
MG: We’re going to listen the title track and can you talk about this song, because there are very different parts inside it.
SH: Yes, I’d say this song is more typical, I think, of what people might be expecting from the combination of Chris Squire and Steve Hackett. I think there are the progressive elements but then there are also the straight ahead rock elements and then the use of orchestra with string players, with cello, violin, viola. And then in the middle the complicated, fast section, the solo section. That sounds a little bit like… like a game show, a bit like what you were talking about, a sport, because we begin squashing and cricking. ( ridono) Very fast and very slow at the same time.
SM: Eccolo allora. “Life within A Day” è l’anteprima… sembra una parola grandissima, non l’ho mai pronunciata in vita mia… un’anteprima mondiale.

(ascolto di A Life within A Day)

SM: “A Life within A Day”, Steve Hackett e Chris Squire in questa anteprima. Steve, Radio Capital has a loto f progressive fans. So, what’s that progressive rock really represents for you?
SH: Well, I a way it’s really free music, because it doesn’t have to always be a long song, it can be any genre of music, so for instance I know that everything I did with Genesis at one time is now described as progressive music, but at that time we used to do some simple songs as well, for instance “I Know What I Like”. It was a very simple short pop song, really with some quirky elements, but… so really progressive music can be anything, it’s open ended, it’s really free music, that’s how I see it.
MG: Enrico from Torino, another listener…
SH: Yes.
MG: …is going to ask if you’re going to use more of Gary O’ Toole’s vocals live and in studio and if is there any chance sometimes in the future that you do something along with Andy Latimer.
SH: Right. Well, I’m sure, you know, at the moment Gary sings quite a lot of the Genesis’ songs that we do live with the band also I’m recording some with Gary’s voice: “Blood on the Rooftops” and “Fly on A Windshield” for instance which we’re doing in the set now. They will be there…
SM: In studio?
SH: Yes, that’s right, we will be doing that in studio. And John Wetton has already done “Afterglow”, so we’re using different singers in different tracks, that’s the idea. So maybe one singer might do two tracks or maybe three, we’ll see how it goes. And Andy, he’s a great guitarist, maybe one day it might be possible to do something together, I don’t know. I’ve done lots of collaborations with other guitarists over the time, you know. So, I enjoy working with other guitarists.
Canterà “Blood on The Rooftops” e “Fly on The Windshield”, mentre invece John Wetton canterà “Afterglow”.

Out of The Tunnel’s Mouth”.
SH: Well, this is one written when I was very depressed, when I was very unhappy and going through a very difficult dark time and I felt like the world was collapsing, but I realised it was the idea of… I had to move on, so it’s describing the death of one way of life and the beginning of another renaissance, so… you know, a lot of fears, a lot of things and also a time to grow up and to move on and embrace life. So… but it’s a very dark song, but with a very bright possibility, optimistic in the chorus which has no words.
Eccola: “Fire on The Moon”

(Ascolto di “Fire on The Moon”)

SM: “Fire on The Moon”, è Steve Hackett, l’album precedente. Your father said that all you need is a bed, a chair and a guitar. But no desk in your life?
SH: Well, that’s funny, because at that time my father… he just saw that I just playing guitar home all the time. He said that to my mother, he said: ‘all Steve seems to need to keep him happy is this’. Of course these days, you know, you need more than that, yeah: you need a mobile phone, you need to be able to tweet, you need a bank, you need all sorts of things but to stay happy, you know, the simple life, just that. So I think he was talking about in the days before I discovered, I integrated in the society: no friends, nothing, just the guitar… old days, he’s talking about that.
“Out of The Tunnel’s” in your living room…
SH: Yes.
SM: So, here the desk…
SH: Oh, That’s right. Yes, in the living room of course there is a dining table. So the living room became the recording studio for the duration of this album, so for about a year I didn’t have a living room we just climbed over the equipment to get the various things… and technicians and musicians taking over the house with the equipment, but… all over the flat, of course, the apartment. And… because I couldn’t use my studio at the time for various complicated reasons. But it shows it is possible to do an album at home if you get the cooperation of the other inhabitants of course.
SM: I just want to say… luckily I have a very under standing wife, Jo, who’s here, so luckily we could do that.
E soprattutto come ti è venuta fuori?
SH: I think this was written with the idea it was going to be a vocal tune and when I played it to the band at that time they just said: ‘why don’t we just play it on guitar, it sounds better like that. So it’s a kind of son of optimism. Really, the idea was at the end of this life we wonder what happens and I was told it might be like this musically.

SM: “Spectral Mornings”, Steve Hackett. Just tell me about some unforgettable night of yours.
SH: Well I remember very well playing here in Rome in 1973. That was quite wonderful. The night before my guitar which was a Les Paul, a Gibson Les Paul, was stolen in Switzerland. Luckily somebody lent me their guitar and it was set up very much like mine. It was a beautiful Les Paul and I played it that evening and I didn’t even have to change the strings, it was absolutely perfect, it was in 1973, I think, that night that we were playing at the Palasport in Rome and it was an unforgettable thing, the crowd was just fantastic as they always are in Rome, it’s not about the site, it’s the spirit of Rome I think, you know… I felt very proud to play in Rome and be one of their heroes for five seconds.
SM: C’ero anch’io quella sera e adesso l’ultimo brano, l’ultimo momento e l’ultima emozione insieme a Steve Hackett qui a Radio Capital.
SH: OK, let me see… (parole che non comprendo, forse un titolo) a little ending from Giuliani, he was one of your great composers… (inizia a suonare e subito s’interrompe) ops, start again…

Grazie.
SH: Thank you.
SM: Grazie, thank you and good night.
SH: Thank you both of you.

Ohibo' Dalex, che "mazzo" che ti sei fatto... [:0] Ti ringrazio moltissimo, ho letto tutto con interesse! [:)]

Steve e' sempre molto simpatico.
